What Is Eczema?

If you have patches of red, dry, scaly skin, you may need to know what eczema is. Eczema is a disease of the skin that affects more than 15 million people in the American population. It burdens people of all ages, races, and gender. The experts have yet to find a cure for this condition; however, it is not a contagious disease.

There are several types of eczema that entail different symptoms and even locations on the body. On adults it is usually seen on the face, neck, hands and legs. On children, eczema is typically observed in the creases of the knees and elbows. Still, eczema can occur on any part of the body.

What eczema is known to look most like are patches of dry, scaly, red skin that seems thicker than other areas. The disease can also show itself in the form of small bumps, skin lesions, and blisters that weep some fluid. Usually with all cases, there is an itchy feeling around the affected skin.

If you are wondering how you could have possibly acquired this disease, you are probably asking what eczema is caused by. It has been found that people who have complications with asthma and hay fever or who have family members with these weaknesses are more likely to experience eczema because they are more sensitive to allergens in the environment. People can also acquire eczema allergies when they come in contact with irritants in many common items. If you are experiencing these problems, you should consult your doctor for a diagnosis to see how this information about eczema relates to you.

Psoriasis is a chronic recurring skin disease. The scope of the disease can vary considerably; from mild outbreaks where the person may not even be aware they have psoriasis, to severe cases which can be socially disabling and, in rare instances, life-threatening.

In principle, people of all ages can get psoriasis, but the early onset form of the disease is mostly seen in 16 to 22 year-olds and the late onset form strikes those between the ages of 50 and 60. Psoriasis is derived from the Greek word 'psora', which means itch. Around two per cent of the population have psoriasis to a greater or lesser degree.
