What is Dandruff?
Dandruff is the name given to a common but often irritating complaint in which dead skin is shed from the scalp, producing unsightly white flakes in the hair on the collar and shoulders. It is easily treated and controlled with Nizoral Dandruff Shampoo. In fact, dandruff is a symptom, not a condition and can have a number of different causes. It affects over 40% of the population at some time in their lives.
What causes dandruff?
There has been some debate about the causes of dandruff.
It is now felt by the majority of dermatologists that the
cause is a fungal yeast known as Pityrosporum. The
surface of the scalp is made up of normal skin like the
rest of our bodies and, like the rest of our skin, is
constantly replacing itself. As dead skin cells are shed they would normally be washed or brushed away without trace. However, if the cells accelerate their replacement cycle, or if for some reason the scalp is excessively dry, these tiny cells clump together to form white flakes that are visible to the naked eye. Depending upon the cause of the flaking, these can be either greasy and mixed with sebum, (the natural oil in our skin), or dry.
